Let me explain: In his classic book the Alchemy of Finance, released shortly after the crash of 1987, financier George Soros cites the event as an example of “reflexivity. This book tells you what it takes to operate a fund worth 100 billions. Imagine if you could command billions of dollars just because you were incredibly talented with maths and programming. New chapter by Soros on the secrets to his success along with a new Preface and Introduction. I did it first in The Alchemy of Finance (in 1987), then in The Crisis of Global Capitalism (in 1998) and now in this book. Imagine if all it took to make millions was to come up with some mathematical formula. (After) the boy cried wolf three times the wolf really came. One was all about alchemy; the other all about chemistry. John Kay, in an interesting but somewhat discursive opinion piece in the Financial Times, compares the structuring of complex securities to alchemy, with all its negative connotations.
